List of Sex Positions

This list of sex positions includes descriptions of various forms of sexual intercourse and other sexual acts between people. Sexual acts are generally described by the positions the participants take in order to perform those acts. Since the number of positions that can be used for sex is essentially limitless, this list is not exhaustive.

Penetrative positions

These positions involve the insertion of a penis or other phallus (such as dildo) into anus.



Penetrating partner on top with front entry

These positions also be used for anal sex. The basic position is called the missionary position. In it, the receiving partner lies on their back with their legs apart. The penetrating partner lies on top of the receiving partner, facing them. The following variations are possible:

• The penetrating partner stands in front of the receiving partner, whose legs dangle over the edge of a bed or some other platform.
• The receiving partner lies on their back. The penetrating partner stands and lifts the receiving partner’s pelvis for penetration. A variant is for the receiving partner to rest their legs on the penetrating partner’s shoulders.
• The receiving partner lies on their back, with their legs pulled up straight and their knees near their head. The penetrating partner holds the receiving partner’s legs and penetrates from above.
• Similarly to the previous position, but the receiving partner’s legs need not be straight and the penetrating partner wraps their arms around the receiving partner to push their legs as close as possible to their chest.
• Like the missionary position, but with the receiving partner’s legs tightly closed and the penetrating partner’s legs spread. In this position, the couple resembles a peace sign (minus the circle) and so this position is sometimes called by that name.

Penetrating from behind

Most of these positions can be used for anal penetration.

• The receiving partner is on all fours with their torso horizontal. The penetrating partner inserts from behind. This is called the doggy position.
• In a variant on the doggy position, the receiving partner’s torso is angled downwards. The penetrating partner can raise their own hips above those of the receiving partner for maximum penetration.
• In another variant of the doggy position, the penetrating partner places their feet on each side of the receiving partner while keeping their knees bent and effectively raising up as high as possible while maintaining penetration. The penetrating partner’s hands usually have to be placed on the receiving partner’s back to keep from falling forward.
• In a variant on the doggy position, the receiving partner kneels upright. The penetrating partner may gently pull the receiving partner’s arms backwards at the wrists towards them.
• In the spoons position both partners lie on their same side facing in the same direction.
• The receiving partner lies on their side. The penetrating partner kneels and penetrates from behind. Alternatively, the penetrating partner can stand if the receiving partner is on a raised surface.
• The receiving partner lies facing down, possibly with their legs spread. The penetrating partner lies on top of them. The placement of a pillow beneath the receiving partner’s hips can help increase stimulation in this position.
• The receiving partner lies face down, knees together. The penetrating partner lies on top with spread legs.
• The receiving partner lies on their side with their uppermost leg forward. The penetrating partner kneels astride the receiver’s lowermost leg.

Receiving partner on top

Most of these positions can be used for anal penetration.

• The penetrating partner lies on their back. The receiving partner kneels on top of the penetrator facing them. Sometimes called the cowboy or cowboy position.
• As above, but the receiving partner sits on top of the penetrator facing away from them.
• As above, but the receiving partner arches their back with their hands on the ground.
• As above, but the receiving partner squats (instead of kneeling) on top of the penetrator facing toward them.
• The penetrating partner is on their back with the receiving partner lying down on top with their knees brought forward against the ground.
• The penetrating partner lies with their upper back on a low table, couch, chair or edge of bed, keeping their feet flat on the floor and back parallel to floor. The receiving partner straddles them, also keeping their feet on the floor. Receiving partner can assume any of various positions.
• The lateral coital position was recommended by Masters and Johnson. The position involves the top man on his back, with the bottm rolled slightly to the side so that his anus is atop his, but his weight is beside him.

Sitting and kneeling

Most of these positions can be used for anal penetration.

• The penetrating partner sits on a flat surface, legs outstretched. The receiving partner sits on top and wraps their legs around the penetrating partner. Called pounding on the spot. If the penetrator crosses their legs instead, it is called the lotus position.
• The penetrating partner sits in a chair. The receiving partner straddles penetrating partner and sits, facing the penetrating partner, feet on floor. This is sometimes known as the lap dance. Other receiver-on-top variants can be adapted in this way as well.
• The penetrating partner sits on a couch or in a chair that has armrests. The receiving partner sits in the penetrating partner’s lap, perpendicular to penetrating partner, with their back against the armrest.
• The penetrating partner kneels while the receiving partner lies on their back, ankles on each side of penetrating partner’s shoulders.

Standing

Most of these positions can be used for anal penetration. In the basic standing position, both partners stand facing each other. The following variations are possible:

• The penetrating partner stands, holding the receiving partner off the ground. The receiving partner wraps their legs around the penetrator’s waist and their arms around their shoulders.
• As above, but the receiving partner’s back is pressed against a wall as a frictional support. This is called the supported congress in the Kama Sutra.
• As above, but the penetrating partner’s back is pressed against a wall for stability. This is called the suspended congress in the Kama Sutra.
• Both stand, the receiving partner facing away from the penetrating partner. This position is varied by having the receiving partner assume different semi-standing positions. For instance, they may bend at the waist, resting their hands or elbows on a table.

Anal-specific positions

Other sexual practices involving the anus, such as fingering, can also be adapted anally. However, some positions are not directly adaptable because of the different angles required for anal entry. Here are listed positions that work well for anal sex. The penetrator can either be a man witg a dildo (or similar).

• Doggy style – see above. This position maximizes the depth of penetration, which may be desirable by either or both partners, but can pose the risk of pushing against the sigmoid colon. If the receiving partner is male, this increases the chances of stimulating the prostate. This position allows for vigorous thrusting. A variation is the leapfrog position, in which the receiving partner angles their torso downward. The receiving partner may also lie flat and face down, with the penetrating partner straddling their thighs.
• Missionary – see above. In order to achieve optimal alignment, the receiving partner’s legs should be in the air with the knees drawn towards their chest. Some sort of support (such as a pillow) under the receiving partner’s hips can also be useful. The penetrating partner positions themselves between the receiving partner’s legs. This position is often cited as good for beginners, because it allows them to relax more fully than is usual in the “doggy” position.
• Spoons – see above. This allows the receiving partner to greatly control initial entry and the depth, speed and force of subsequent thrusting.
• Receiving partner on top – see above section. These are sometimes cited as a good beginning positions, as they allow the receptive partner more control over the depth, rhythm and speed of penetration. More specifically, the receptive partner can slowly push their anus down on the penetrator, allowing time for their muscles to relax.

Less common positions

These positions are more innovative, and perhaps not as widely known or practiced as the ones listed above.

• The receiving partner is on bottom. The penetrating partner lies on top perpendicularly to them.
• The penetrating partner lies on their back, legs spread. The receiving partner is on their back on top of the penetrator, legs spread, facing the opposite direction.
• The penetrator and the receiver lie on their backs, heads pointed away from one another. Each places one leg on the other’s shoulder (as a brace) and the other leg out somewhat to the side.
• The receiving partner lies on their back with knees up and legs apart. The penetrating partner lies on their side perpendicular to the receiver, with the penetrating partner’s hips under the arch formed by receiver’s legs. Sometimes called the T-square.
• The receiving partner lies on their back with the penetrating partner lying perpendicular. The receiving partner bends the knee closest to the penetrating partner’s head enough so that there is room for the penetrating partner’s waist to fit beneath it, while the penetrating partner’s legs straddle the receiving partner’s other leg. The in-and-out thrusting action will move more along a side-to-side rather than top-to-bottom axis. This position allows for breast stimulation during sex, for partners to maintain eye contact if they wish, and for a good view of both partners as they reach orgasm.
• The penetrating partner sits on edge of a bed or chair with feet spread wide on floor. The receiving partner lays on their back on the floor and drapes their legs and thighs over the legs of the penetrating partner. The penetrating partner holds the knees of the receiving partner and controls thrusts.
• The Seventh Posture of Burton’s translation of The Perfumed Garden is an unusual position not described in other classical sex manuals. The receiving partner lies on their side. The penetrating partner faces the receiver, straddling the receiver’s lower leg, and lifts the receiver’s upper leg on either side of the body onto the crook of penetrating partner’s elbow or onto the shoulder. While some references describe this position as being “for acrobats and not to be taken seriously,” others have found it very comfortable.
• The penetrator straddles one of the legs of the receiver, who is lying on their side. Sometimes known as the Gupta Straddle.

Using furniture or special apparatus

Most sex acts are typically performed on a bed or other simple platform. As the range of supports available increases, so does the range of positions that are possible. Ordinary furniture can be used for this purpose. Also, various forms of erotic furniture and other apparatus such as fisting slings and trapezes have been used to facilitate even more exotic sexual positions.

Non-penetrative genital-genital positions

Frot is rubbing erect penis against erect penis, especially the mutual rubbing of the frenula. A variety of sexual positions are possible. For instance, the partners may both be reclining, sitting, kneeling, or standing. In one more complicated position similar to the “double Y”, both partners recline on their backs, one partner’s legs over the other. Males may also engage in anal sex with eachother. During frot, a man can masturbate his and his partner’s penises simultaneously with one hand. He can also masturbate their penises with the foreskin of one penis over the glans of the other in a position called docking. Circumcised men can also use a sex toy called a “docking sleeve,” a tube-shaped device made of silicone, rubber or Cyberskin which takes the place of the foreskin.

Oral sex positions

Oral sex involves contact between the genitals and/or anus of one person (the passive partner) and the mouth of another (theactive partner).

Fellatio

Fellatio is oral sex involving a man’s genitals. Possible positions include:

• The man lies on his back while his partner kneels between his legs.
• The man lies on his back while his partner lies off to the side of his legs.
• The man sits in a chair and partner kneels in front of him between his legs.
• The man stands while his partner either kneels in front of him or sits (in a chair or on the edge of a bed, etc.) and bends forward.
• While the active partner lies on their back, the man assumes the missionary position but adjusted forward so as to insert his penis in his partner’s mouth.
• The man stands or crouches at the edge of the bed, facing the bed. The active partner lies on the bed with their head hanging over the edge of the bed backward. The man inserts his penis into his partner’s mouth, usually to achieve deep throat penetration.
• The glory hole – the man inserts his penis into a hole in the wall or fence while someone (usually a complete stranger unseen by him) gives him fellatio from the other side of the wall. This act is vaguely reminiscent of the tale of Pyramus and Thisbe, but these two mythical lovers merely passed notes through a hole in the wall, rather than inserting body parts.

Anilingus

Positions for anilingus, also known as “rimming” or “anal-oral sex”, are often variants on those for genital-oral sex. Rimming-specific positions include:

• The passive partner is on all fours as in the “doggy style” position. The active partner is behind them.
• The passive partner is in the missionary position with their legs up.

Simultaneous oral sex 

Simultaneous oral sex between two people is called 69. It is called the congress of the crow in theKama Sutra. Each partner may be male or female. They can be lying side-by-side, lying one on top of the other, or standing with one partner holding the other upside down.

Other positions

Non-penetrative

• Fingering of the anus.
• Frottage – rubbing one’s genitals on one’s partner. This is commonly done against the buttocks or their genitals.
• Dry humping – frottage while clothed. This act is common, although not essential, in the dance style known as “grinding”.
• Humping – thrusting one’s genitals against the surface of non-sexual objects, clothed or unclothed. This word is also used in the UK as slang for penetrative sex.
• Handjob – grasping the penis and moving the hands up and down along its length.
• Footjob – using the feet to stimulate the penis.

Penetrative

• Fingering of the anus.
• Shocker – simultaneously fingering a man’s anus with one’s thumb while stimulating his scrotum with the other fingers. This is done by making a shape with the hands as though one were holding the bowl of a wine glass.
• Fisting – inserting the entire hand into the anus. This usually requires large amounts of lubricant and relaxation. The hand is usually not actually made into a fist, but instead the thumb is placed between the middle and ring fingers, hence the alternate name “duck-billing”.
• Using dildos – using inanimate objects to penetrate the anus.

Group sex

Various assemblages of people may participate in group sex. While group sex does not imply that all participants must be in sexual contact with all others simultaneously, some positions are only possible with three or more people.
As with the positions listed above, more group sex positions become practical if erotic furniture is used.

With three participants

When three people have sex with each other, it is called a threesome. Possible ways of having all partners in sexual contact with each other include:

• One person performs oral sex on either of the other two partners, while they engage in anusintercourse.
• One person is on all fours while being penetrated from behind, simultaneously giving oral sex to a male. This is sometimes called fingercuffing. Anal variations exist.
• Three partners lie or stand in parallel, with one between the other two. Sometimes called a sandwich. This term may specifically refer to the double penetration of a vers, with one penis in his anus, and the other in other anus.
• A man has anal sex with a bottom and both give oral sex to a third person.
• Three people perform oral sex in a triangular configuration.

Multiple penetrations

“Multiple penetration” refers to one person being sexually penetrated by several objects simultaneously. It generally involves between three and five participants. Penetration may be accomplished by fingers, sex toys, or penises. Attempting to accommodate multiple penis-sized objects in the anus can easily be painful, so it is not something that is likely to be done casually. These positions are popular in pornography, but it is difficult to say whether they enjoy any significant popularity outside of it. Positions that are limited to one penetrator per orifice are less challenging.

• If one person is penetrated by two objects, it is generically called double penetration. Given the anus and mouth, there are six ways in which this can be done. These include
• If one person is penetrated by three objects, it is generically called triple penetration. Possibilities include
• Penetration by larger numbers of objects is rarer and generally not named, although it is clear how to extend the nomenclature given above. There is one well known exception:
• Simultaneous penetration of the anus by two penises or other objects. This is commonly called double anal.
• Simultaneous penetration of the mouth and anus. This is sometimes called the spit roast.
• Three penises penetrating either the anus simultaneously.

• Double anal penetration (DAP) – simultaneous penetration of anus by two penises. The term gained popularity after its inclusion in the movie Orgazmo by South Park co-creator Trey Parker, and is also the name of Parker’s and Matt Stone’s band.

These variations of multiple penetration are commonly seen in pornography aimed at straight men. Some of these positions put two men in intimate contact with each other, either directly or indirectly.

With many participants

These positions can be expanded to accommodate any number of participants.

• A group of males masturbating one another in turn is called a circle jerk or bukkake in Japan. This term is also used to describe other male group masturbation activities.
• A group of men each performing oral sex on the next, is called a daisy chain. This term is also sometimes means a group of men simultaneously penetrating and being penetrated by each other anally in a chain formation.
• A group of men in a line, coupled to each other through anal or oral sex. This can form a full circle.

Sex positions

As with all sexual activity, practice makes perfect! You may find it takes you some time to get used to anal sex and the sex positions that suit you, but once you’re relaxed and at ease with it, you’ll most likely find anal intercourse a source of great pleasure.

Of course, one of the big issues for gay men having anal sex for the first time is whether they see themselves as “active” or “passive”. In other words, what sex position do you take? Top or bottom? And what does that say about your masculinity?

There’s an image of the active, masculine, man as being the one who fucks the passive, less masculine, man during gay anal sex - but in reality, both partners are active to some degree. The man taking his partner’s penis is capable of thrusting his hips, moving his pelvis and enjoying the sex just as much as the man who’s doing the penile thrusting. More recently, gay men having sex have been called the “top” (the one doing the penetration) and the “bottom” (the one being penetrated). This is better terminology, but it can get confusing if the bottom is, for example, sitting in his partner’s lap, since you might argue he was then on top! If you’re confused, don’t worry - all will become clear. In fact it’s probably time to abandon the notion of active and passive sex positions, and think of one’s own sexual position as something that can change from time to time.

What makes anal sex pleasurable? If you don’t already know, a man’s prostate gland is in an ideal position to be stimulated during anal sex when his partner’s penis presses on it through the wall of his rectum. The more a sex position that makes that happen, the more pleasurable it will be. (In addition, different sexual positions suit different shapes of erection, as we shall see.) In fact, the prostate will be stimulated by the thrusting of a penis, or finger, or dildo, or anything else introduced into the rectum. And this pressure on the prostate is responsible for much of the pleasure that the man receiving his partner’s penis will actually feel; but the whole area around the anus is erotically sensitive, and of course there’s the emotional thrill of having sex as well.

If you’re new to anal sex, the first thing to do is get comfortable with your own anus. You can wash it, lube it up with oil or sex lubricant and gently caress and finger it during masturbation: this will begin to open you up to the erotic possibilities of the area, and get you used to the feeling of being penetrated - albeit by your own finger. Next, ask your partner to play with your anus as you enjoy mutual masturbation. The idea, of course, is to learn in steps, and not to expect to know or do everything at once; the basic idea of anal sex is simple, even if you’ll need to experiment with the actual sex positions you’re going to use. And as you go along, you’ll also find out what sex itself - and interacting with someone else in this most intimate way - means to you, and what it tells you about yourself.
As far as anal sex positions are concerned, you’ll probably want to try both roles - that of penetrator and that of being penetrated. You might find one more rewarding or pleasurable for you, or you might like both.

The First Group of Sex Positions

The basic sex positions for anal intercourse are simple enough. Possibly the most common position is to have one partner kneeling behind the other.

To get into this position for sex, you may well find it useful to play with your partner’s anus to relax him and open him up. In the early stages of sex, you can stimulate his anus with your fingers or mouth and gently encourage him to relax and get used to the feeling of being penetrated.

An enjoyable variation on sex in this position is to have the the receiving partner lying flat on the bed on his stomach, perhaps with his hips raised a little on a pillow if that makes penetration easier. Though this can be a relaxing position, the bottom guy can’t move as freely, and the guy on top can’t thrust as deeply.

In these anal sex positions, passion and power can really take a hold. It’s certainly a very exciting position for the man who’s thrusting, and he can often get carried away in his excitement! And the excitement isn’t limited to the man on top, for the bottom man - that is to say, the man taking his partner’s penis - can thrust his hips back and forth or move them in a circular movement: he certainly doesn’t have to be passive in this sex position - or indeed in any other. Generally, though, most of the pelvic movement will come from the man who’s penetrating his partner - and this may actually be more satisfying for both men. The active partner - the top - enjoys the power and sensation of his thrusts, while the passive partner - the bottom - gets the pleasure of receiving a penis into his body and the erotic sensations which go with this (like the stimulation of his prostate).

Even though all anal sex positions will provide some stimulation to the prostate, you won’t be surprised to hear that some are better than others for this - and to some extent this depends on the size and shape of the top’s penis. What that means in practice is that you’ll probably need to experiment to find the position which gives you the greatest pleasure during anal sex.
For example, a guy with an upwards curving erection like this:

It’s all about the getting the curve of his erection oriented so that his thrusts press on his partner’s prostate.

It’s also true that some anal sex positions are more tiring than others, so you’re going to find that you can keep going in some of them for longer than you can in others. Still, changing position during sex can be part of the fun.

Sexual Problems You May EncounterJust a word about common sexual problems. Gay men are no less susceptible to the common male sexual dysfunctions than are heterosexual men: premature ejaculation, male orgasmic disorder - otherwise known as delayed ejaculation - and erectile dysfunction. You probably know what is meant by premature ejaculation - it’s the tendency of men to ejaculate too quickly as defined by the fact that neither they not their partner has received the sexual satisfaction which they would wish for. The Second Group of Sex Positions

Maybe the most enjoyable position for men who are in a relationship is the classic “missionary” position. This is where the partners lie on each other facing each other. It’s an intimate position that allows eye contact and a lot of bodily contact during sex.
As you might expect, there are many different variations on the basic position - a few of which are shown in the pictures below. The challenge for the man on top will be supporting his weight on his arms as he fucks his partner, though the “edge of the bed” sex position shown below can help with that, and it’s also a position which gives him the pleasure of seeing his penis entering and leaving his partner’s body as he thrusts.

Anal sex in this position isn’t too difficult. But once again, it can be very helpful to start with some gentle play that opens up the “bottom’s” anus - that’s to say, the “receiving” man’s anus; or, if you prefer, the man being penetrated. Provided he’s washed and perhaps even used an anal douche (a small amount of warm water to wash out the rectum) there won’t be a problem with hygiene. As the photos demonstrate, you can always combine fellatio with anal play, a combination that can really relax the receiving partner.
Being uninhibited is a great help here, of course. If you’re hung up over the size of your cock, for example, or on positions of sexual politics (e.g., what does it mean if you let someone fuck you?), or around potential hygiene problems, then you’re going to have a lower level of sexual arousal - and probably satisfaction - than you otherwise would.

Once the man being penetrated is relaxed and ready, it’s a matter of applying plenty of lubricant - and “plenty of lubricant” means as much as will make the sex slippery and easy, for the anus has no natural lube of its own to help the penis slip in. After that, successful sex depends on finding the orientation of your bodies that will allow you to thrust and receive thrusts in comfort.

The moment of first penetration can be incredibly exciting for both partners, but for a novice receiver it needs to be done very slowly, so that his anus can relax as his partner slowly moves in. It’s often a good idea for the penetrating partner to push the head of his penis in a little way, then withdraw, then push in again.

This allows the receiver to get used to the idea of being penetrated, and still allows him some sense of being in control. Needless to say, if it’s uncomfortable for either partner, you should stop and talk about it, and perhaps try another sex position.

Kissing and intimate contact with your partner is a very enjoyable source of pleasure during sex, but remember that you may also need to communicate! Good sex sometimes just flows naturally out of each partner’s desire, but more often it works better when the two men communicate, telling each other what they like and don’t like, asking for help if they need it (like when you’re trying to get your penis into your partner, you can always ask him for help guiding it in), saying what position they want to try, and making a joke or laughing about anything that’s not going so well.

The position shown in the left hand photo above is one where passion and excitement can take a hold and provide an incredible rush of sexual excitement for the “top”. He can see the effect of his sexual power on his partner as he fucks him, can kiss and hold him as he does so, and the bottom can reciprocate with passion, perhaps even wanking himself as his partner fucks him (though of course there’s no reason why his partner can’t do that as well) so that the couple has the possibility of a simultaneous orgasm - which can bring the level of sexual energy to an incredible peak for both men.

And by bracing himself as shown in the second photo above, the top can gain extra leverage and thrust harder, which may make their sex even more exciting for both men.

The third group of sex positions - sitting and squatting sex positions

Sitting sex is easy! It can develop naturally from a session of kissing and sexual foreplay, or you can move straight into it from any other position in bed as you have sex. Obviously, the man penetrating will feel more comfortable if he lies back on the bed as his partner sits on top of his erect penis. The man on top - who we’d call the “bottom” in other circumstances, since he’s taking his partner’s penis - can sit either facing towards or away from his partner. Like this:

As you can see from the pictures above, there are almost unlimited variations of how you can arrange your legs and bodies in these sex positions. Playing around with sex positions is half the fun - getting stuck in a routine of having sex in just one position can be very boring! Novelty is a large part of sexual excitement for men, and trying different sex positions can keep your relationship fresh.

When the man on top faces his partner, he can lean forward to kiss; when he faces away, his partner can enjoy the sight of his buttocks. The man lying on the bed has limited movement, though if the man on top raises himself on his knees slightly, it is possible to enjoy some thrusting.

The sex position pictured in the first of the images above is hard to achieve unless the man kneeling is flexible and/or he has a long penis. It may also need the bottom’s hips to be raised on a pillow so that his partner can gain easy access for intercourse. What’s more, the amount of movement he can make is limited, but he does have the pleasure of seeing the act of penetration. The second position is much more achievable for the majority of men, and it allows a degree of intimacy and kissing, while the third picture is probably best reserved for times when you feel particularly acrobatic while you’re having sex! The final picture shows a passionate, sexy position where hard thrusting is possible and in which both men can express their full sexual power.

If you or your partner are having trouble reaching orgasm during sex, with long periods of thrusting before you ejaculate, then you may be experiencing what is known as delayed ejaculation This means that you find it difficult if not impossible to ejaculate during sex.

Side by side sex positions

The side by side position is relaxing and easy. You start in the traditional missionary type position, then roll over onto your sides, still facing each other. It’s a relaxing position, you can kiss and talk, and look into each other’s eyes - great if you’re in a relationship - and you can also last a lot longer before you come. This means you can go for a simultaneous orgasm if you want, though it can be fun to watch your partner come, or to take turns with coming first. In this position, the guy doing the penetrating must extend his pelvis between the other’s bent legs. Deep penetration and vigorous thrusting are both possible.

You can also lie side by side with one guy behind the other, both facing in the same direction. This position allows you to relax and you have your hands free to explore each other’s bodies. Also penile entry is easy and fairly deep, and the bottom guy doesn’t have to support his partner’s weight. You can also thrust vigorously during sex in this position.

The side by side sex position is a good one for intimate connection and both partners can move their hips.
