1 cup steaming water
1 teaspoon J-LubeBefore you start, make sure everything is as clean and sterile as possible.
Take about 1 teaspoon of J-Lube powder (for thinner J-Lube decrease to ½ teaspoon; you can fine tune your recipe for the consistency you want, and you can always add a little more water or more J-Lube during the process) and put that in a Pyrex dish (I use a Pyrex 4-cup measuring cup).
Boil water in a tea kettle until you hear a manic whistle.
Add 8 fluid ounces (1 cup) of boiling water to the J-Lube powder and stir (I use a silicone spatula I got from the dollar store, it’s solid silicone so it’s easy to clean unlike the ones that have a plastic handle — I know you can get them for $10 or so at many retailers; if you’re lucky you’ll find them for $0.99 like I did).
When the J-Lube is mixed well with the hot water, put the container into a microwave oven, and microwave for about 4 minutes (do it in two 2 minute increments — microwave ovens very on power, mine new one is only 800 Watts, in the older 1500 Watt oven it took substantially less time). Stir the mixture and repeat until you get a consistency that’s frothy and thick.
You should realize that the mixture will thicken some, so if you think it’s too think, you can add more water from the kettle (it’s still plenty hot enough).
You’ll want to experiment with the consistency, I actually like my J-Lube thick, it will leech moisture while you’re using it and continue to disperse.
If you do not want to pre-boil your water, or you live in an area where the water quality is very low, from a well, or contains a high mineral content, use distilled water (you do not need to pre-heat it, but you will need to microwave it a little longer).
Once the mixture has slightly cooled, put it into containers for play; I use baby sports bottles and generally divide the mixture into two separate bottles just incase one gets contaminated. You’ll want to scrape the mixing dish to get the last little bit of J-Lube into the bottle.
If you are not going to use the J-Lube when it cools (10 to 15 minutes), consider putting it in the refrigerator or freezer and warming it in the microwave about 10 minutes before play starts. Remember, there are no preservatives in this mix, so it will not keep long. It will only take about 30 seconds in the microwave to take the chill off, then you can let it settle at room temperature.
To cleanup the utensils I recommend using dish washing soap and salt. The salt will help break down the J-Lube. DO NOT place the dishes into your dish washer before making sure that there is no J-Lube residue, in fact I would keep my mixing dishes for J-Lube separate from your normal use dishes.
