1- The types of lubes available
In the world of sex, there are three main types of lubricants: oil, water and silicone, each of which has its own unique characteristics and feels. Among these three categories there are definitely advantages and drawbacks to each. You should really try a number of different lubes yourself to help determine which types work best for you : ultimately; selecting the best lube comes down to your own personal preference.
- Oil-based lubes : If you plan on practicing safer-sex (i.e. using condoms) then you should cross oil lubes off your list. As the name states, these are lubricants made from an oil base. This can include things like baby oil, Vaseline, Crisco or other oils. Not only are these lubes extremely messy and difficult to clean up, they are corrosive to latex, the material that most condoms are made of. The only real upside to oil lubes is that they are very slippery and long lasting… and very, very cheap.
- Silicone-based lubes : For anal sex, silicone lubes are ideal and extremely useful. They are slippery, long lasting, easy to clean up. Most importantly they are condom safe. As the name states they are made from a silicone base, which are specifically designed to create minimal heat and friction. Because silicone lubes do not primarily contain water, they are not easily absorbed by the skin, therefore last much longer than water-based lubes.
- Water-based lubes : Like their silicone counterparts, water based lubes are completely condom safe and great for anal sex. The main difference between water and silicone-based lubricants besides their primary ingredient is how long they last. The major disadvantage to a water based lube is that the body absorbs the water more quickly. This means that you will need to re-apply fairly regularly. On the other hand, this means that water lubes are a breeze to clean up.
- Gun Oil Silicone : Concentrated and water-resistant, Gun Oil won’t break down or dry out providing a long-lasting and a slick experience. Glycerin and paraben free
- Maximus : Though Maximus is technically a silicone water based hybrid, it is one of the thickest and long-lasting lubes you will find: Period. Its consistency, and longevity and overall quality make it ideal for anal sex. A little bit of this stuff goes a long way. The best part is that it is very, very slippery, but just as easy to clean up as any other water based lube. High paraben content however.
- Pjur Backdoor Anal Glide : For people who have had problems with pain or discomfort as a bottom in the past, includes an anal relaxant. This makes entry and sex a lot easier and much less painful. It also contains a mild numbing element to help with any discomfort. For tops, the numbing effect is slight, but is enough to make them last longer. Backdoor, as the name suggests, is designed specifically for anal sex. It has a nice thick consistency that’s super slippery and long lasting.
- ID Platinum : Silicone version of ID Glide, thus more expensive of course. Somewhat thicker and stickier. Yet still very good and not pricey compared to other lubes.
- ID Glide : ID is famous because it was the first ever water-based lube to meet pharmaceutical quality and performance standards. The nice thing about ID is that it comes in generous bottles that are relatively cheap. The down-side is that you need to reapply often. For anal sex, it is not that great, but at least you won’t go bankrupt using it.
Have you thought about using a lube injector ? This makes applying lube effortless as it literally shoots a generous amount of lube deep inside making prep extremely easy…
