Cock Rings – How Do They Work?

Q: Cock rings. Wow. Fucking cock rings. Whew. Good times. Do you have any experience with them? Tips, tricks?

A: Ooh, it sounds like somebody has had some fun with them already!

One of our first posts for the Frisky Feminist was about cock rings, so you can click there for the basics about the different kinds of rings and some important safety information.

Basically, cock rings can be quite versatile for any couple (or single, or triple, or whatever suits you) – a cock of any kind need not even be involved. The vibrating kind can be fun to play with by yourself if you enjoy vibration, and while the textured and vibrating rings are generally marketed as adding clitoral stimulation during PIV sex, some of the fancy, extra-vibratey ones could provide some nice stimulation for anal sex between male-bodied people or could be slipped over certain kinds of strap-ons for some additional fun during pegging or strap-on sex between female-bodied people. And a basic cock ring likethis could be useful for anybody who’s interested in increased sensation and prolonged erections. (But seriously, you don’t want it to be too prolonged – 20-30 minutes is the time frame we see recommended.)

If you’re interested in the vibrating type, it may take a big of finagling to get the vibe(s) to hit the right spot. If you have PIV sex and are accustomed to lots of fast thrusting, you both might need to slow things down to allow the vibe to come in contact with the clitoris as opposed to just bouncing all over the place. And you may find that certain positions work better than others. Some companies have tried to take this into account and make rings that are touted for being “great for doggy-style aficionados,” for example, like in the picture on the right.

Want even more stimulation? There are cock rings with attached anal beads, with fake tongues meant to mimic oral sex, and evenwith dildo-like attachments meant to help facilitate double penetration (if you can stop laughing at the guy in the pith helmet on the box long enough to give it a try). If one of you wants additional clitoral stimulation without the vibration, check out a ring like this – it can also be turned over to provide some pressure on the wearer’s perineum. Overall, it’s mostly a matter of figuring out how you’d probably like to use the toy and what you’re hoping to get out of it and looking for some toys that will facilitate that.

Some of these may look intimidatingly complicated or a tad frightening, but many of them are designed to provide stimulation for both people and they try to position the multiple bullet vibes accordingly. And while all those spikes and poky bits may not look terribly alluring, they can provide some nice sensations that are quite different from a bullet vibe on its own or a similarly hard and smooth vibrator.

Regular old cock rings, which are generally worn under the balls, aren’t quite as entertaining to look at but can still provide a lot of fun for solo or partner sex. They come in all sorts of materials – silicone, rubber, aluminum, leather, wood, gold, jelly, etc. As always, you’ll want to know how to clean your cock ring and what kinds of lube it’s compatible with. The material will also determine when to put the ring on – if it can stretch, it can be put on over an erect penis, but if it’s made of a more rigid material it will need to be put on sooner, when the penis is still really bendy. This kind of ring often comes in different sizes, and JT’s Stockroom has a helpful explanation of how to figure out what size is needed.

It sounds like you may have already discovered how much fun cock rings can be, but we hope we were able to give you some additional information to help you (and your partner[s]) enjoy yourself even more!
