Twink: General Definition
Generally speaking, twinks can be thought of as a male who is his mid-20’s and has a slender build. Twinks can be short or tall and are usually slender.Many gay men have incorrectly used the term “Twink” as a descriptor for young gay guys that are thought to be effeminate. This however is an incorrect use of the term. To be an average twink, one must be in their mid-20’s (give or take) and have a slender to medium build with an atypical presentation (aka average).
Effeminate twinks and masculine twinks have their own sub-types, which will be explored shortly.
Twink Taxonomy – Subtypes
Many younger gay men fall within the general classification of “twink” however, their features are such that as a group, require a sub-type. Using our twink taxonomy, we can now place these once uncategorized twinks into one of two sub-types.These subtypes help with gay somatotyping along the twink spectrum. (FYI – a somatotype is nothing more than a body type).
What follows is a quick review of twink subtypes: Twunks and Glamour Twinks.
Twunks (Muscular Subtype)
An offshoot of a twink is a twunk. Like their close cousin the twink, twunks share some of the same characteristics of a male being and in their late teens to mid-20’s. The main difference however can be found in the size of the male’s body. Twunks typically have a muscular build but are not so massive that they would be considered a jock. Most all twunks are thought of as masculine.Famous twunks include California born Tyler Posey, who you may have seen on the television series, Teen Wolf. He has a muscular, defined body but it is not overdone. Born in 1991, Posey fits the criterion of a twunk almost perfectly because of his age and his body type.
Glamor-Twinks (Pretty Subtype)
Glamor twinks are men who share the same characteristics as their twink and twunk cousins except glamour twinks are deemed to be pretty. Key features of glamor twinks include the trait of looking well put together.Many glamour twinks will use a number of cosmetic products to assist them with their personal appearance, including creams, anti-shine products, lip glosses and hair removal products. Some will even go through different kinds of beauty enhancing procedures to help them improve their appearance. A good number of glamor-twinks have the end goal of looking like a movie star or other Hollywood celebrity
Pups – Naïve Subtype
Pups, generally speaking, are younger gay men (late teens to early 20’s). This twink sub-type is somewhat unique. The key characteristic with a pup is fairly simple – pups have little or no experience within the gay world. In fact, many gay folks consider pups to be naïve to gay life. Guys who are in their late teens to early 20’s and are just coming out fit within the pup realm.Pups can be large, small, masculine or feminine. It is important to note that pups are not the same as cubs, which is a different category entirely. When you hear the word pup – think young and wet behind the ears.
